A slice of history shows the importance of the humble loaf of bread in civilisations throughout history.

Bread has been one of Man’s staple foods for thousands of years. In fact, as far back as the Neolithic Age, 7,500 years ago, people mixed cereal grains and water into a paste, which they cooked on an open fire. In ancient Egypt, bread was one of the most significant areas of food preparation, along with beer. Loaves discovered in 5000 year old tombs can be seen in the British Museum!

But bread is not only celebrated as a universal basic food. It is also a potent metaphorical, allegorical and cultural symbol. Evidence of this can be found in paintings, literature, language, as well as religious writings and teachings throughout history.
